Castle of Platamonas

A pirate monument next to the Aegean Sea.

Most impressive is the view from the air, enjoy it flying above the castle on a tandem paraglider. Only like this you discover the real shape of the walls.

By hiking around the castle walls, stroll along different view points towards Mount Olympus, the village Neos Panteleimonas and the sandy beach stretched along the coastline of the Thermaean Gulf.

Once a year you can just relax in the acropolis and listen to the special acoustics during the concerts and theatrical performances at the Olympus Festival.

The ancient city Heraklia used the top of the castle hill and also at the foot of the hill were settlements, that were assigned to this historic city. The castle was of great value to its various occupiers as it guards the important route between Thessaly and Macedonia.

“The first Macedonian city behind the river Pinios, between Dion and Tembi lying on a rock”

From Thessaly coming the Romans held their camp in the plain between Herakleion and Leivithra before starting their campaign against Macedonia. Of course the outstanding strategic importance of the hill was not hidden from them.
